FAQs
Get the answers to typical questions regarding Supported Independent Living, Specialist Disability Accommodation, and our customized solutions throughout Australia.
What is Supported Independent Living (SIL)?
Supported Independent Living (SIL) provides in-home support from support workers, helping you to live as independently as possible. This support can range from physical assistance, like daily bed transfers, to ensuring your safety at home.
SIL funding eligibility isn’t tied to your housing type. Whether you rent privately, own your own home, live with others, or reside in Specialist Disability Accommodation, you might qualify.
SIL funding is categorised into three levels:
- Lower Needs: Focuses on regular supervision of your living situation.
- Standard Needs: Provides active assistance with most daily tasks, available 24/7.
- Higher Needs: Delivers continuous and more complex active assistance.
A SIL provider is the organisation that employs the support workers who assist you at home. We serve as the SIL provider for all Caring Australia homes.
What is Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA)?
Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA) refers to the actual buildings where people with disabilities live. NDIS SDA funding is only available for individuals with very high physical support or safety needs.
SDA funding helps residents pay rent to the person or organisation that owns the SDA building they live in.
Is it common to have SIL but not SDA funding?
Yes, many people receive only SIL funding, and only some participants receive both SDA and SIL funding.
Can I live in a Caring Australia home if I don’t have SIL funding?
Only participants with SIL funding included in their NDIS plan are eligible to live in a Caring Australia home.
If you require short- or medium-term accommodation, please refer to Caring Australia Respite Services. These services do not require SIL funding, as respite is funded from your Core Supports.
Can I live in a Caring Australia home if I don’t have SDA funding?
Yes, most, but not all, of Caring Australia’s homes are registered for SDA.
Caring Australia provides SIL services in 10 homes that do not require you to have SDA funding. These homes are located at Castle Hill, Chester Hill, Granville, Merrylands, Narraweena, Ryde, Casula, and Warwick Farm.
What does SIL funding cover?
SIL funding covers all on-site care services provided to you within the home. These include assistance with transfers in and out of bed, wheelchair transfers (if required), toileting, showering, dressing and grooming, laundry, cleaning, grocery shopping and meal preparation, mealtime assistance, and similar supports.
What expenses do residents pay from your Disability Support Pension?
Board and Lodging: 50% of the participant’s Disability Support Pension, payable to Caring Australia. This covers:
- Groceries
- Household cleaning items
- Utility usage charges (electricity, gas, water, phone, internet)
- Motor vehicle expenses
- Gardening and cleaning subcontractors
- Minor domestic purchases (additional kitchenware, whitegoods, etc.)
Rent: 25% of the participant’s Disability Support Pension, payable to the housing provider. Plus, 100% of the Commonwealth Rent Assistance payment, paid directly to the housing provider by Centrelink. This covers:
- Rental payment for living in the home
- Repairs and maintenance of the home, furnishings, and appliances
- Utility connections (electricity, gas, water, phone, internet)
- Shared area furniture (including whitegoods and window coverings)
- Council rates
- Building insurances
