Short Term Assistance and Medium Term Accommodation (STA and MTA) for NDIS Participants
The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) provides various services to enable individuals with disabilities to live longer. Short-term accommodation (STA) and medium-term accommodation (MTA) are very significant services when people are not able to remain at their regular homes due to care requirements, medical adjustments, or other urgent needs. This guide will take you through all the things you want to know about STA and MTA, such as who can access it, how it benefits, NDIS regulations, funding, and more so that participants receive the best possible accommodation and support.

What is short term accommodation (STA)?
Short-term accommodation (STA) is short-term living that the NDIS provides for individuals with a disability. Participants may use it if they require care for a limited period. It occurs when carers require respite or a person with a disability is recovering after falling ill or undergoing a procedure.
STA also has a vital function for individuals requiring assistance while awaiting longer-term housing or supported living arrangements. This is more than accommodation. It supplies important assistance with daily tasks, medical treatment, and personal care.
Duration of Stay
STA takes anywhere from a few days to a few weeks, providing individuals with the care and support they require in this period. The flexibility of STA allows individuals to receive assistance while waiting to make long-term arrangements.
Respite for Carers
Perhaps the greatest advantage of STA is the respite care for carers. Through this service, family members and caregivers can have a well-deserved break while knowing their loved one is safe. NDIS respite care provides caregivers with an opportunity to rest, which is essential to keep them healthy and well.
Personal Care and Assistance
When they are present, individuals receive assistance with daily activities. This includes assistance to dress, eat, transfer, and attend to health needs.
What is Medium Term Accommodation (MTA)?
While STA is best suited for short visits, Medium-term accommodation (MTA) is intended to provide respite for individuals who require housing for an extended period of time ranging from 30 to 90 days. MTA provides a wonderful solution for individuals relocating between care environments that take more recovery time, or holding out to move into long-term supported housing.
Length of Stay
Individuals reside in MTA for 30 to 90 days. This provides them with a place to stay while they search for a permanent residence or receive medical treatment.
Comprehensive Support
MTA is not merely providing individuals with a housing solution. It also assists them with daily activities, rehabilitation, and personal care.
Flexibility
MTA suits people who require more time than STA provides but are not yet prepared to commit or receive ongoing assistance.

What's the difference between STA and MTA?
The key differences between Short Term Accommodation (STA) and Medium Term Accommodation (MTA) are:
- Length of Stay: STA is for stays up to 28 days, while MTA is for stays up to 90 days. You can use your allocated funding days in one continuous stay or spread them across multiple stays, as you prefer.
- Purpose of Stay: STA is more flexible and can be used for various reasons, including respite and trialling new living arrangements. MTA is mainly for temporary relocation while your permanent housing is being arranged. For example, if you’ve been discharged from hospital and your permanent residence requires modifications before you can return.
- Accommodation Type: Both STA and MTA cover similar accommodation settings, but MTA may also include rental properties and supported living environments.
If I am approved for MTA, do I need approval for STA too?
Your NDIS plan will clearly state if you’ve been approved for Short Term Accommodation (STA) or Medium Term Accommodation (MTA). You don’t need approval for both; you only require approval for the specific type of accommodation you wish to access. So, if you have MTA approval, you don’t need STA approval, and vice versa.
Can I extend my stay if needed?
Medium Term Accommodation (MTA):
While MTA provides flexibility, stays are generally limited to 90 days. It’s intended as a temporary housing option while you’re waiting for a more permanent living arrangement. However, if unforeseen circumstances necessitate a longer stay, you can request an extension from the NDIS. You’ll need to provide documentation explaining why the extension is required and how it might affect your transition to your permanent housing.
Short Term Accommodation (STA):
STA offers a shorter stay, typically up to 28 days. This is suitable for situations like temporary breaks from your usual living environment or short-term support needs. You have flexibility within this timeframe. You can use all your allocated days in one longer stay or spread them out over multiple visits, depending on your individual needs.

This will depend on the NDIS funding you have available. We’ll work with you to find an appropriate NDIS housing solution that meets your needs.
Are meals provided during my stay in short and medium-term accommodation?
For Short Term Accommodation (STA):
Yes, meals are usually included as part of the STA funding under the NDIS. This is because STA is designed to provide a comprehensive support package, including accommodation, personal care, and meals.
For Medium Term Accommodation (MTA):
No, meals are not typically included as part of the MTA funding under the NDIS. MTA funding primarily covers the cost of the accommodation itself. You’ll generally need to budget for your own meals or explore other funding options within your NDIS plan to cover food expenses.
How long can I stay in short and medium-term accommodation?
The length of your stay can vary depending on your needs. Short Term Accommodation is funded through your NDIS plan and provides up to 28 days per year. Medium Term Accommodation allows you to stay away from your usual home for up to 90 days per year.
